The project emerged out of a complex area thanks to the talent of a team made up of the some of the best architects in the world, including some of the most established minds in the area of design and urban planning.

The Design Team

GROUND UP is the name chosen by the innovative urban planning group led by Outcomist, Diller Scofido + Renfro, PLP Architecture and Carlo Ratti Associati, and ARUP – who worked together to conceive the vision of the Parco Romana Masterplan. This is a project where the true protagonists are the starchitects themselves, along with the symbolic locations they have designed.

For the Olympic Village design, an architectural selection process was announced, with 27 groups taking part, made up of 71 studios and 9 different nationalities. The design for the Olympic Village area was awarded to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill – SOM, the studio that came in second place in the competitive selection process for drafting the Masterplan.

Elizabeth Diller/Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with a global reputation for their inclusive public space designs, are the studio appointed for landscaping and creation of the urban areas for social interaction.

Lee Polisano/PLP Architecture, architectural design and urban planning leader for large scale developments, has provided expertise in residential planning to the team, designating spaces for the “future of living”.

Carlo Ratti's work uses digital technology as a tool to bring value to urban areas and shape the future of working spaces.

Gross.Max, working with horticulturalist  Nigel Dunnett and international studio  LAND, have collaborated on the productive landscape project. .  

Alejandro Gutierrez / Arup, has managed the design of the infrastructure and sustainability analysis.

In addition, specialist consultants have supported the main team: Systematica has designed and planned a diverse mobility and transport network. The problems and requirements of the Olympic Village have been taken on by Studio Zoppini e AECOM. The technical consultants are LAND, for landscaping, and Artelia, for areas related to architectural engineering. Finally, Portland Design has guided the study of brand identity and the narrative of this new, important area of Milan.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill – SOM, one of the largest engineering, architectural and urban planning firms, has been entrusted with the design for the Olympic Village, which will be converted into student housing at the end of the Games.
